Gold metal crossed cannons hat pin can be added to the Civil War slouch hat or kepi cotton cap. Pin measures 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches.
The crossed cannons was adopted by the US government for use as the insignia for its artillery in 1836. During the year of 1858, artillery enlisted men began to wear the insignia on their caps. Their company letter was to be placed above the brass pin. This insignia is still in use today.
