On May 13, 1607, a small band of men lead by Captain John Smith stepped on the shores of Jamestown, Virginia, to establish the first permanent English settlement in America. The most important map to appear in print during the period of early American settlement, Captain John Smith's Virginia was first published at Oxford, England in 1612.
The ornamentation of the map is characteristic of 17th century cartography. The map includes the coastal region between the North Carolina/Virginia border and the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Inland, the map extends for 150 miles.
