Gold metal crossed swords pin can be added to the Civil War slouch hat or kepi cotton cap. Pin measures 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches.
The crossed sabers was adopted by the US government for use as the insignia for its mounted troops in 1851. During 1861, all mounted troops were designated cavalry and wore crossed sabers with their company number or letter in the upper angle of the brass device.
