Gold metal souvenir lapel pin featuring the Civil War Cavalry insignia of the crossed swords. Military clasp, pin measures 7/8 inches across.
The crossed sabers insignia was established for Dragoons in 1851. Union Army enlisted men started wearing the cap insignia in 1858 with a company letter and/or regimental number above the swords and the unit number below the swords. Dragoons, cavalry and mounted rifles were designated as cavalry in 1861 and allowed to bear the insignia.
