Gold metal bugle hat pin can be added to the Civil War slouch hat or kepi cotton cap. Pin measures 3 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches.
The French hunting horn was adopted by the US government for use as the insignia for its infantry in 1836. In 1858, infantry enlisted began to wear the brass decoration on their caps. Their regimental number was to be placed inside the bend and their company letter above the bugle.
