Japanese Instrument of Surrender 1945
On September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, Japan, Japanese representatives signed the official Instrument of Surrender, prepared by the United States War Department and approved by President Truman. It set out the complete capitulation of Japan.
Signers of the document included Japanese representatives Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu as well as General Douglas MacArthur, Commander in the Southwest Pacific and Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. General MacArthur accepted the Japanese surrender “for the United States, Republic of China, United Kingdom, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and in the interests of the other United Nations at war with Japan.”
On September 7th, the surrender documents were presented to President Truman and then were exhibited at the National Archives in Washington, DC, where they are held today.
Antiqued parchment paper looks and feels old. Shipped rolled, the document size is 11 x 14 inches.
