Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863, is the most remembered battle of the Civil War. The South needed a major victory, especially one on Union soil. After three days of bitter fighting, the Confederate army was forced to retreat, never again to mount a major offensive.The American Civil War, in which the lives of more American soldiers were lost than in any other war before it or since it, was a war the American public is still fascinated with today. One of the few records we have of the day to day life of the soldiers fighting at Gettysburg is from the surviving original letters and photographs of the soldiers.
