Malcolm X - By Any Means Necessary
Born Malcolm Little, he grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and fell into a life of crime. While in prison, he converted to the Black Muslim faith (later to orthodox Islam) and changed his last name to X. A charismatic advocate of black separatism during the 1950's and 1960's, he rejected Martin Luther King, Jr.'s policies of non-violence. The remarks contained in this document were given as part of a debate sponsored by the Oxford Union, a student organization at Britain's Oxford University. The proposition under debate was Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice, moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue, a statement popularized in July 1964 by Barry Goldwater.
